Here’s the truth: achieving your career dreams begins with deep self-reflection. You might have a general idea of your talents or a vague sense of where you want to go, but an assessment can reveal a whole new path you never even considered.The reality is, many people have hidden skills and untapped interests that could lead them to success in industries they’ve never imagined... but they just don’t know it yet.

Career assessments are game-changers. They take the best and worst parts of who you are, then use your strengths and passions to map out career pathways that align with your true potential. These insights will help you find a career where you’re not only successful, but also deeply fulfilled.

Most career assessments will highlight which of the 16 career clusters will best fit your skills and personality. The 16 career clusters are 16 categories of industries that most modern jobs fall into. The categories were developed by the U.S. Department of Education in 1999.

As career counselors, we help clients identify where previous attempts at success went wrong. We also help to break down your lofty goals into small actionable steps that are less overwhelming. 

Many people can follow a step-by-step process and having steps laid out to follow may reduce anxiety and fear clients have about pursuing their personal and professional goals. 

An Example of What May Take Place During A Session

​Session: Self-Assessment and Identifying Transferable Skills

Focus: Conducting a deeper self-assessment and exploring transferable skills for the new career.

  • Review client’s skills and experience: Identify core strengths and transferable skills from previous roles that could be applied in the new career.

  • Explore potential career fields: Look at industries or roles that could align with the client's interests and skillset.

  • Discuss practical constraints: Explore the time and cost required for acquiring new skills or education (e.g., training, certifications, job search time).

  • Financial considerations: Discuss how to manage financial distress while transitioning. Explore budgeting, saving, or seeking part-time or freelance work to supplement income.

  • Homework: Have the client research potential career fields and roles, identifying key skills and job requirements.

Accomplish:

  • Create a clearer picture of the client’s transferable skills and potential new career options.

  • Develop an understanding of what new skills or qualifications may be needed.​​​
