Jordan's Essay & Vision for the Future
My name is Jordan Blanks, and I am currently pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Construction Management Technology at Wake Technical Community College, with plans to graduate in May 2025. My journey into the construction industry is deeply tied to my passion for creating safe, sustainable structures that directly improve the lives of others. From my first hands-on experience as an apprentice to my current role as a Project Engineer Intern at BE&K Building Group, I’ve come to understand how much this trade industry can transform not only my life but also my community.
The path I’ve chosen is about more than building structures; it’s about building opportunities. Working with Habitat for Humanity early on helped me see how construction impacts individuals and families. Whether it’s a single-family home or a large-scale commercial project, every structure represents a foundation for growth, stability, and safety. Knowing that my work can provide these essentials to others drives me to excel in this field.
A life goal of mine is to become a Project Manager for a reputable construction company. This role would allow me to take the skills I am honing—cost management, scheduling, sustainability practices, and team leadership—and apply them to projects that make a real difference. Construction management is a strategic and collaborative field, and I am drawn to its combination of problem-solving, innovation, and the ability to leave a tangible mark on the world. Achieving this goal will not only provide me with a fulfilling career but also enable me to give back to the communities that have supported me along the way.
The challenges I face in this journey have been significant, but they’ve also been powerful learning experiences. Balancing a full course load at Wake Tech while interning and working part-time to fund my education has been demanding. However, these challenges have taught me resilience, time management, and the importance of staying focused on my end goal. My determination to succeed reflects the values I hold dear: perseverance, integrity, and a strong work ethic—values passed down through my family, much like those of Sir Willie J. Jordan.
Family has always been a source of inspiration and motivation for me. Growing up, I saw firsthand the value of hard work and the importance of creating opportunities for future generations. I believe the construction industry provides a platform for me to carry on this legacy, transforming not only my own future but also the lives of those around me.
In my internship, I’ve had the privilege of solving real-world problems on job sites. Whether it’s identifying cost-saving measures, streamlining project timelines, or ensuring safety protocols are met, I approach every challenge as an opportunity to grow. I’ve also sought mentorship and guidance, understanding that collaboration and learning from others are crucial to my success.
The construction trade offers me a way to align my skills with my life’s purpose. With this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my goals and creating a career rooted in service, innovation, and integrity. Thank you for considering my application. I am committed to honoring the values of Sir Willie J. Jordan through my work, my character, and my contributions to this vital industry.
